The Help

Kate says: I'll be the only one saying anything about this movie because Emilee was not with me. I wish she were but she's at some nifty theatre thing. I'm not so I had to find some way to entertain myself!
I read The Help a little while ago and LOVED it. I couldn't put it down! So when my school had a showing of this movie for free, I just had to go. I was a little nervous because we all know how people who read think about movie adaptations. However, I really loved the movie. It was so close to the book, it was just unbelievable. Anything that was cut was a small detail that didn't matter too much. I'm usually enraged by the end of watching movies based on books I loved, but I really did enjoy this one! The cast was spectacular. My friend who went with me kept saying that she wanted most of Skeeter's dresses and I couldn't blame her! They were adorable! The little detail I loved the best was the sounds of the bugs in the background. My family is from the south and you really can hear those bugs all the time. Mae Mobley was completely adorable. I love that name, I think someday I'll have a future pet named that!

Do I recommend it?
Kate: YES! But book first!

An Affair to Remember

Kate: So I've heard of this movie for years because I grew up watching Sleepless in Seattle and I must say, I loved actually watching the movie they quote so often. I loved it. Some old movies can be snooze fests or odd, but this movie was just very cute and sweet! There was some sadness and some very funny moments (hence picture above!). I thought the crowd laughing at them was just a riot!

Emilee: "Men never get this movie..." "I know!" Oh my goodness, I really enjoyed this movie. I didn't realize how much they quote this movie in Sleepless in Seattle, but I understand why now. Just a simply good movie. I will only drink pink champagne from now on.

Do we recommend it?
Kate: Yes!
Emilee: Yep, try and watch it and imagine that it is an alternate ending to Titanic.

50/50

Kate: I love Joseph Gordon-Levitt. So I don't think the movie's plot would have mattered to much, as long as he  was on screen as much as possible. I was terrified for most of this movie that he was going to die. This movie wasn't particularily happy or sad, it was a good mix of both. And set in Seattle! I was mostly disappointed by the fact that I didn't know he was here filming so I could have attempted to look like an idiot in the background of one of the scenes and told everyone that I worked on a movie with him. Biggest con for me was Seth Rogen. I think this was one of the better movies he's been in besides Knocked Up but something about him just makes me think that he's an idiot. Which irritates me because he's an idiot getting acting jobs!!

Emilee: I actually like Seth Rogen, not as much as I love Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but still, he's not bad. This movie, I laughed, I cried, I was appalled at his terrible girlfriend. It was a good movie! Although, Kate made fun of me for crying when he was told that his chemo was ineffective and he needed surgery. It's not my fault that I have a heart and she's stone. But that's another story. The point is, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is wonderful.

Kate: Yes
Emilee: Yes! Have tissues if you are not a robot.

Misery

Kate: I HATE SCARY MOVIES. But this wasn't scary... this is a thriller... and I suppose I like thrillers... the point is this movie was pretty terrifying. Lots of screaming at Paul to GTFO, lots of burying my face in my pillow pet and squealing. Spoiler Alert: When Paul was crawling away after Annie's face smashed into the typewriter and you assume she's dead, I said "Do you think she's actually dead?" and as soon as I finished that sentence, she attacked him and Emilee and I screamed! Cons, it's definitely not the scariest movie ever, but still quite frightening. The special effects were pretty poor- anything to do with blood was either orange or purple! One of my biggest problems with this movie was when she pulled him out of the car and proceeded to give him CPR. He wasn't drowning, he didn't choke! He had just gotten in a car accident! It was obvious CPR was not needed!! But I must say that her house was absolutely adorable... on the outside of course.

Emilee: AHHHH! Kathy Bates is terrifying in this movie! I really don't do scary movies either, which is why we watched this one in the early afternoon when it was light out. We spent a lot of the movie telling Paul to move faster and get back to his room! There was a lot of screaming. Extreme fandom can be fatal... And that pig, that pig... I will never look at pigs the same way again.
Also: "We're having a Kathy Bates  movie marathon, but not Misery, do you want to come? Oh, he hung up."

Do we recommend it?
Kate: Yes, but just once and with people.
Emilee: You should see it, but if you are easily scared, like us, watch it during the day!

Drinking game idea we had: drink whenever he shoves something down his pants. You'll be surprised at how often that happens!!

Breakfast at Tiffany's

Kate: I adore Audrey Hepburn, so it was incredibly embarrassing how long I've lived my life without seeing Breakfast at Tiffany's. I think Audrey Hepburn was so pretty and her voice is absolutely wonderful. The movie was different than I thought it would be. There were a few parts of the plot that were silly, sort of on the lines of The Graduate, but without the silly parts it was really cute. I loved when Holly and Fred went about their day doing things they had never done before the best. I loved her clothes, her little half bath sofa and her unnamed Cat. The ending was very good, I love romantic comedies!

Emilee: I think that having Breakfast at Tiffany's would make me feel better, too! I simply adore Holly Golightly and I want to have a cat named Cat, and an apartment with a bath sofa, and a phone in a suitcase, and a fire escape that leads to my attractive neighbor's apartment! I want to have a day that consists of entirely new experiences. I am completely lost in the romanticism of this movie, even though, like Kate said, some parts of it are a little silly and maybe unnecessary.

Do we recommend it?
Kate: Yes, especially for girls.
Emilee: Absolutely!

Precious, Based on the Novel Push By Sapphire

Kate: So Precious, Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire was always a movie that intrigued me, but I wasn't really looking forward to watching it because I knew it would be dark. Now, while it was a dark movie, it wasn't as dark as my mind built it up to be. It made me very thankful for my mother and where I grew up. The biggest problem I had with this movie was that the actress  playing Precious wouldn't open her mouth when she was talking. There were many parts that she mumbled so much, I couldn't understand a word she was saying. While definitely not a feel good movie overall, I think everyone should watch it at least once. I'm also interested in reading the book, usually I do that before watching the movie.

Emilee: I expected this movie, Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, to be disturbing and dark. It definitely was disturbing and dark, but not as extreme as I thought it would be. I have to agree with Kate, I do wish that the actors enunciated a little more clearly. I missed some lines that I hope were not important! It did make me grateful for where I grew up and the opportunities I have had in my life.

Kate: Yes
Emilee: Yes!

The Graduate

Kate: So the only thing I knew of The Graduate was the scenes it showed in 500 Days of Summer, but even then I had to look up what movie it was. 500 Days of Summer is my all time favorite movie, to do it justice I had to watch this. Overall, I liked the movie. The plot was a little odd, I thought the acting was just okay, the music got stuck in my head for the rest of the night.

Emilee: I was so ready to watch The Graduate and understand the hype about it: all the Simon & Garfunkel songs written specifically for the movie, the (500) Days of Summer references, and all the Mrs. Robinson-inspired cougars out there. I really liked it, even though it was nothing like I expected. Watching this movie actually did increase my understanding of (500) Days of Summer, and that is all the reason I needed to watch it. Hopefully we didn't totally misread the plot like Tom did.
